Hiring of New Nurses Slows Dramatically in 2009

To better understand the current scarcity of RN jobs, including those for new graduates, CINHC conducted a nursing employer survey from March through May, 2009.  We learned that approximately 40% of new graduates may not find employment in California hospitals.  Only 65% of hospitals indicated they were hiring new graduates, with a majority of these significantly decreasing the number of new graduates they plan to hire.

Where there were still hiring opportunities, experience was required.

Recently, CINHC reviewed these findings and solicited solutions to the situation during stakeholder meetings held in the San Francisco Bay Area, Central Valley, and Los Angeles and San Diego. This survey was supported by the California Hospital Association, the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, the Association of California Nurse Leaders, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
