A Gift to Californians

Deloras Jones

CINHC Executive Director

The first goal of the Statewide Nursing Master Plan (developed by CINHC), building educational capacity, calls for a school of nursing at each UC campus with a medical school.  The recently announced Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis is a giant leap toward fulfilling that vision.

Establishing a new school of nursing at UCD will significantly contribute to the state’s ability to address the nursing shortage.  The intent to begin with a PhD program and prepare faculty, along with nurse scholars, will contribute to breaking up the biggest bottle neck in expanding education:  the faculty shortage.  This barrier to expanding capacity will worsen as faculty retires: the average age of nursing faculty is now 51.

Through use of the newest and best ideas, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing is an opportunity to develop an educational model with the potential to create a program that prepares nurses for health care delivery systems of the future.   The school is a gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, not only to the nursing profession, but also to the people of California.

The impact of this school will reach beyond the boundaries of California.  It will influence the direction of nursing education across the country.
