  • The Foundation for California Community Colleges designated $3 million to Flo’s Cookie Jar, a fund that provides emergency grants to California nursing students facing financial crises. » more
  • The Deloras Jones RN Scholorship Program, funded by Kaiser Permanente, awarded $302,500 this year to 126 California nursing students. This program has awarded $2.8 million to more than 1,600 students since it was established in 2001.  » more

  • Flo's Cookie Jar has a new Web site. Developed by nurse leaders and educators, this program provides emergency grants to RN students.

  • Deloras Jones, RN, MSN, executive director and founder of CINHC, received NurseWeek's Diane F. Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to nurses and nursing throughout her career (NurseWeek 9/25/06). 
  • Sharlyn Hanson, executive director of the California Nurse Alliance, has joined CINHC's Steering Committee.  The Alliance is a national organization of professional RNs within SEIU.
  • The Workforce Investment Division  of  the California Employment Development Department has made three awards under the Rural Nursing Simulation Grant program. » More information and contacts.

  • The Board of Registered Nursing won a court decision upholding its position that Excelsior College graduates, like other out-of-state grads, must fulfill all California licensing requirements, including supervised clinical practice, in order to qualify for licensure as an RN. » Press release

2005

  • Jacqueline Powers Doud, president of Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles, has been elected to the board of directors of the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care. For more information about Dr. Doud, please visit the Mount St. Mary’s College Web site 

  • California hospitals and health systems are continuing to support CINHC efforts to develop a strategic nursing master plan and develop solutions to the state’s nursing shortage.

In the past 12 months hospitals and health systems throughout California have responded to the collaborative efforts initiated by CINHC to solve California’s nursing through programs that will build educational capacity, develop nurse leaders, and focus on ways to assure that the state’s nursing supply is representative of the state’s diverse population.

Organizations that have invested in CINHC Master Plan efforts and other programs include:  Adventist Health (Roseville), Anaheim Memorial Medical Center (Anaheim), Association of California Nurse Leaders, California Wellness Foundation, Catalyst, Inc., Banner Lassen HealthCare District, California Hospital Association, Cedars-Sinai (Los Angeles), Childrens Hospital of L.A., CR Bard Co., Gannett Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Hill-Rom, Hoag Memorial Hospital (Newport Beach), John Muir/Mt. Diablo Medical Center, Kaweah Delta Health District (Visalia), Kaiser Permanente, Kimberly-Clark, The Riordan Foundation, St. Joseph Health System (Orange), Sutter Health, and the Association of California Nurse Leaders.

“We are quite grateful and pleased that these and other organizations recognize the innovative efforts of CINHC to bring together nursing leaders and organizations from throughout California to jointly and cooperatively create long-term solutions to the nursing shortage, while at the same time improving the quality of nursing so that the health of all Californians is assured,” said Deloras Jones, executive director of CINHC.

2004

  • The Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative is funding a two-year, $1.77 million project in conjunction with CINHC and FCCC to develop a Centralized Clinical Placement System for nursing students.   » read more
  • In conjunction with the Coalition for Nursing careers in California, CINHC has started work on a campaign to recruit more men into nursing (December).

  • CINHC participated in the 2nd Annual Nursing Workforce Centers Meeting, held April 29-30, 2004, in Orlando, Florida. CINHC board member Judee Berg described CINHC's work, including the Education/Service Partnership Initiative and Master Plan project.
  • Creating a common voice and an advocacy agenda for California nurses was the theme of opening remarks by Deloras Jones during a workshop co-sponsored by several nursing organizations, including CINHC and Long Beach Memorial Hospital.  » PDF
  • The Kaiser Permanente "Deloras Jones Registered Nurse Scholarship Program," makes awards to students with at least one more semester for a degree. In 2004, $300,000 in scholarships were awarded in five categories: academic excellence, graduate studies, nursing as a second career, under-represented groups in nursing and affiliate schools.  The program honors Ms. Jones, CINHC executive director , who retired after 35 years with Kaiser Permanente. 
  • Judee Berg, RN, MS, a founding director and CINHC's treasurer, has been appointed Vice President for Professional Services for NurseWeek/Nursing Spectrum.
  • The Kimberly-Clark Company made a three-year grant to CINHC to support development of the nursing Master Plan.  » read more

2003

  • Statewide Educational Policy - As an outcome of the National Conference of State Legislatures sponsored meeting in San Diego in September, which focused on nursing education and state policy, Deloras Jones has been working with Dr. Vernon Lin from Long Beach VA to facilitate a regional planning effort in Orange and LA Counties.
  • Education/Service Partnership Initiative – This Bay Area initiative, funded by CHCF, is well underway with both schools of nursing and hospitals completing the questionnaire to provide the baseline data.

  • Leadership Development Program - The second program was held October 13 – 17, with over 50 attendees. Response has been excellent with four programs for general enrollment scheduled for 2004, with additional interest expressed by hospitals and health systems for individual programs.

  • Master Plan - The Steering Committee and Board will serve as Executive Oversight Group for the Master Plan development. The first meeting of the Executive Oversight Group was held in January 2004 in Sacramento.

  • Diversity – CINHC is seeking opportunities to partner with key organizations already focusing on this issue to include, Welcome Back and Coalition for Nursing Careers in California (CNCC).
